Aspen Race for the Cure (Aspen, CO) results
First race at altitude (7,900 ft.), arrived 47 hours prior. While in a loop, the course was effectively all uphill. The first 1.2 was slightly uphill on road, then we switched to a dirt/gravel trail with steep switchbacks that dropped way down into a ravine. From there it was a gradual uphill back to the start, a mile or so on somewhat loose dirt. I ran two to warm-up before, though perhaps too soon before the start. Placed 21/926 overall, 18th man, 4th in class. (splits 6:33, 7:12, 7:29, 0:47) Wore T-4s. The winning time was 17:51.

Small race in Poolesville. Went out too fast: was pacing off the first woman who was flying -- I figured if she could do it, I could too. But... when we got to the first mile split at 5:45, she stepped out of the race! Needless to say the (net uphill) remainder was not so fun. Perfect morning: mid-40's, only a light breeze, sunny. Wore singlet, shorts, gloves, and T4's. Only the first and third mile marked -- hard to judge splits along the way. Was a little slow of plan at 3, picked it up, really dug in for the last 1.5. Not many racers, so basically alone for the last half of the race. Wasn't confident of my time until right at the finish. Course was two loops around the park. There was a 5k at the same time (started behind the 10k) so it was a little odd. Won 3rd in class (40-49), though was actually fourth as the overall winner was 45 and not counted in class awards.

It went better than expected, no doubt influenced by my head-to-head competition with Mike Roth. We battled it out at the finish and I just edged him out by 0.2 seconds in a photo finish after trailing him the entire race. The intense kick necessary on the homestretch made me very glad to have worn my spikes. Knee was pretty good, though left leg was very tight the following couple of days. Hopefully I am somewhat through my knee issues and can start training more seriously again.

Good run -- felt strong throughout on this hilly course (probably could have run a little harder!) Ran first mile in 6:02. Thankfully no grill smoke at the finish this year. Won 3rd in M 40-49 (was also 3/19 in M40-44).

The race went pretty well, despite my legs having felt tired this week from recent mileage ramp-up. Slight course PR as I was 0:09 faster than last year - splits of 6:13, 6:32, 6:40, 7:07 (ugh!), 6:32, 6:28, 1:12. Let Arya Akmal and Cindy Conant start slipping away from me around mile 1, then started working back up around mile 4 -- finally caught Cindy just after the last turn, 50 yards from finish. Wish I'd know Arya was in my age group -- I might have tried a little harder! One-mile warmup; ran the 5K course for cool-down with Cindy and Arya, Jean Betz ran with us too for first 0.6mi. Knees were fine on warm-up, race, cool-down; had a little pain standing around afterwards -- better after stretching.

Cool morning (41?), damp from overnight rain. While I wasn't as fast as last year, I ran pretty well -- beat John Way and Hector Montesinos. Just squeaked past Arya Akmal *right* at the finish... to his cry of, "NOOooo". 16th overall and 3rd in age group -- needed it for CS. Ran about 2mi before and about 3mi after.

Perfect weather for racing; about 40 degrees and sunny. A breeze started kicking up, but it wasn't too bad when I finished. Ran the first mile a bit fast (5:47), but backed off a bit. Felt like I was running fairly close to the edge, but had enough left to kick strong at the end. I count this as a real PR as last year's Run Aware 5K was almost certainly short. This was a good start to the new year!

Perfect weather: 35 degrees, sunny, almost no wind. Unfortunately I have been feeling ill for a few days, also not getting enough sleep -- but managed to run a respectable race. Decent weather -- about 38 degrees, some wind but not too bad, slight spitting frozen precipitation (more during cool-down). I was comfortable in shorts, singlet, and cotton gloves. Came out a bit too fast and paid for it later. Second mile was the fastest. Apparently Mike had been sandbagging and really came to race after all -- he was close to me in the second mile (though I didn't know it at the time) but I managed to pull away. My age-group 2nd will net me 9 CS points. This was a course PR as well.

Hunt came up from GA to run and parents from FL to watch. Unfortunately a wet morning, though around 50 degrees. Wore singlet/shorts/gloves -- removed gloves early and singlet around 6mi. First mile was terribly slow (7:20) due to starting too far back in my wave -- had to fight through people for first 1.5 miles. Mike was 30 seconds ahead at 6mi (good head start in corral), but I fought up to him in the last two miles and passed on homestretch (6 second gap to the line). Also beat AA and TM. New course this year. It was nice having the family here.

Took 3rd for Male 40-44 group (#1 got first master) - w00t! A bit of weirdness on the chip timing... I passed a guy with my finishing kick and crossed the line about 10 feet in front of him. He was scored ahead of me despite the fact that he started closer to the starting line than I did... He wasn't in my age group, so it didn't impact awards, but it doesn't inspire confidence in the chip timing system. Good miles today: Ran a little more than 2 miles to warm up and then re-ran the course over for a nice cool-down.

Sunny but chilly morning -- maybe 28F with 13mph wind. Wore shorts, compression tee, thin skullcap, and not-warm-enough gloves. I had planned to take photos after the race, but my fingers were so cold and lifeless it took several minutes to get the key out of my pocket. It took a while, but they thawed and came back to life eventually. Other than my hands/fingers, I was comfortable. The wind was at our back coming home which was nice.
